"Hi, swee'heart!" Jackie sang into the phone. "Where's that idiot taken you now?"
The Doctor scowled at the mobile. "This is the idiot."
"Where's my daughter?" Jackie demanded. He hated the high, tense thread of panic that ran through her voice whenever he was the one to contact her. Admittedly, he didn't contact her often, and it was usually something bad when he did, but who would want to talk to someone who panicked every time you spoke to them anyway?
"Stop worrying! She's doing well. I just had a question that only you could answer. How did you get Rose's name? Was it a family name or something?"
"Oh no," Jackie said with a laugh. "It's kinda silly, actually. She's named after my favorite actress from the 40's. Very glamorous, that Rose Tyler. I think she was married to Orson Welles for a while. Him or somebody famous like that."
The Doctor's jaw clenched so tightly he thought it would break. "Was she now?" he asked as sweetly as he could manage through his teeth. "When's the last time you watched one of her movies?"
"Oh, ages. Rose was probably a very little girl the last time."
He nodded. "That would make sense. Might I suggest you go to the video rental store tonight and pick up a few of them, along with a great big bottle of wine?"
"Why's that?" Jackie asked.
The Doctor sighed, looking at the glossy poster depicting his Rose standing in the arms of an adoring Orson Welles. The poster was for a movie called Hollywood Dreams. "No reason," he said at last, downing his glass of scotch at one go.
"Wait a second," Jackie said. He could hear the thread of panic tightening in her voice. "You tellin' me that the Rose Tyler is my Rose?"
"I am," he said, tapping his highball glass on the counter for Captain Jack to refill. Jack frowned at him and shook his head, but the vulpine look that flashed across the Doctor's face decided the issue and Jack refilled the glass, rolling his eyes.
"Please don't say that," Jackie said, her voice small on the other end.
"Why?" the Doctor asked.
"Cos Rose Tyler the actress died very young in a horrible car accident with a couple of big-time actors. It was so tragic, they even wrote a couple of songs about it. My favorite was 'The Night The Stars Went Out.' Always makes me cry like a twit. That can't be my Rose."
Makes sense, the Doctor thought to himself. What better way to get her out of here without suspicion? "It's going to be all right, Jackie," he said. "Trust me. That was probably a hoax I set up so we could leave. Don’t worry - nothing's going to happen to Rose."
"Hold on a second," Jackie said, and he could hear the clacking of a computer keyboard on the other end. He rolled his eyes and drank his scotch while he waited. He was already formulating plans for getting to Rose. It wouldn't be the first time he'd had to outwit security and climb a few fences. He was so lost in his plans that he barely heard Jackie gasp. "Oh, Doctor."
"What?" he asked.
"Oh no," Jackie breathed. "It is you. I thought you'd always reminded me of somebody famous with that new head of yours."
"What's me?" he set his glass down and looked questioningly at Jack as if expecting him to know the answer to the question. Jack shrugged and took a swig from the bottle of scotch.
"D'you know somebody named Jack Harkness?" Jackie asked.
"Yes, I do," he said slowly, eyeing his friend again.
There was a long pause; long enough that the Doctor was just about ready to shout for Jackie to say something when she finally spoke. "You, Jack Harkness and my Rose are all gonna die in that crash."
"This conversation ends now," the Doctor said, getting to his feet. "Don't tell me another word."
"Doctor, you can't let that happen!" Jackie sobbed. "Don't let anything happen to my baby!"
He clicked 'end' on the mobile and threw the phone across the room like it was poison, and then took the scotch from Jack and downed another healthy portion.
Jackie Tyler clutched the receiver with both hands as she stared at the internet article on her computer screen. It was a still from a musical she had never seen called "Are You My Sunshine?" The three of them were leaning towards each other with their hands on their knees; Rose was smiling at the camera, while the Doctor gave the camera a cute little smirk. Jackie didn't know the third person in the photo, but she assumed it was Jack Harkness. If the grainy photo was any indication, he was an extremely good-looking young man. The headline on the picture screamed GONE TOO SOON.
"Don't let anything happen to yourself," Jackie whispered to the dead connection.

Got a bunny from my friend and it demanded to be written. Who am I to argue with the muse? You'll find this one has an entirely different tone from Into The Howling. Also, I know 10/Rose/Jack is not canon, but I do not care. See "What Happens in Vegas" and "Doctormania." The Doctor took Rose's mobile out of his jacket pocket and dialed, cringing at the thought that he was deliberately ringing Jackie. Rose's mum answered on the second ring.Rating: Teen
