Silly question, but I like to be accurate when I write and I haven't (yet) found a really reliable website to verify my British slang questions, so I thought I'd post a quick question here. Sorry if this is a silly thing to do.

What would be a colloquial way to say somebody failed a subject in school? I mean, other than "failed" - I'm looking for something along the lines of "flunked" or "had to take remedial xx" Maybe there's nothing like that and I'm a complete idiot, or they're the same here as there. But, I though I'd ask in case someone would like to edify me. :)

Thank you!

I don't know, but if you don't get any answers, post your question on [livejournal.com profile] dw_britglish. I guarantee, you will get multiple GREAT answers in a few minutes. I use them all the time! That is how I found how just how expensive good champagne was in the UK, a neighborhood near the Naval Observatory for the Doctor to live while stranded, and that most Brits don't know what a cinnamon roll is.

Well I can only go by personal experience of course, but in the area where I live I've never really heard anyone use a slang term for it, it's simply a case of having failed as far as things like exams go

We just say 'failed' an exam or a subject. As you get older to GCSE (age 16) or A Level,(age 18) if you do badly or fail, you might 'resit subject x' or 'do resits'.

Okay...yeah, I'm learning that it's completely different from the way things are done in the US...I'm blown away by my staggering ignorance, mostly. :)
