You asked for it, you got it! This is the first sequel to Flower & Willow, an AU take on Doomsday.

Title
: Into the Howling
Rating: Teen
Pairing: 10/Rose
Category: Drama, Romance, Humor, Action/Adventure
SPOILERS: AU on end of Doomsday and points west.
Summary: What if things had happened just a bit differently there at the end, with the levers?
Notes: All the love in the world to the best betas in the world:[info]kelkat9, [info]onabearskinrug and [info]who_in_whoville, with a little extra love to Who for the title <3

He saw her grip slipping on the lever, fingers loosening by fractions until they gave and she began hurtling towards the Void. In that instant the Doctor decided that 900 years of life was plenty and let go, tumbling towards her. His arms wrapped crushingly around her ribs as they were swallowed by the Void a microsecond before Pete Tyler warped into their universe and found the levers unmanned, the Doctor and Rose nowhere to be seen. He popped safely back into his homeworld before the walls were sealed forever.

“Rose! Where’s Rose?” Jackie screeched, grabbing Pete by the lapels of his jacket.

“She’s with the Doctor,” Pete answered. “She’s safe. They’re both safe.”

He walked away from her tears and her questions and out of his Canary Wharf to the pub across the street, where he washed the vision of the empty levers in the wrong world away with glass after glass of straight bourbon.

Voidspace.

The Doctor squeezed Rose as tightly as he could, until he felt her ribs threatening to give under his grip. She was screaming – he could feel the vibration of her voice against his chest, but the howling Void wind destroyed all sound. It felt like the skin was being peeled off his bones as they twisted and tumbled through nothing, towards nothing. He felt the ragged vibration of his own agonized scream in his throat, but could not hear himself over the winds of the Void.

He had to stop this. They couldn’t fall like this forever. He pried his eyes open and for a moment was afraid that he’d gone blind again, but there was nothing to see in the Void. There was nothing in the Void but the two of them and the endless, mind-raking howling. Still, he strained in the darkness for the slightest glimmer of light.

Rose’s jaw was moving against his chest. She was trying to talk to him. He patted the back of her head, hoping that would send a signal to her that he couldn’t hear what she was saying. She dug her fingers deeper into his clothes, wrapped her legs around his and clamped down as hard as she could.

Think! He stuck one hand into his pocket while still keeping his death grip on Rose with the other, and pulled out the sonic screwdriver. It was useless here, but perhaps it could give off some light so he could see if there was anything to be seen. He lit it up and could feel it vibrating, but it gave off none of its comforting blue glow. Even holding it up directly in front of his eyes and pressing the button did not show any light or give any sound. Only the vibration in his hand let him know that it was working at all.

He could feel the vibration of sound, even if he couldn’t hear the sound over the howling. That meant sound waves were traveling, if not being properly received. If he could get his mind to block out the howling, perhaps he could hear, if not see. His mind reeled at the prospect; he’d just begun to acclimate to blindness when his sight was restored by the nanogenes. The idea that perhaps his blindness in their home world had been preparation for the trials of the Void brought him as close to a concept of faith in a benevolent higher power as he’d been since staring down the Beast in the pit.

Heady concepts aside, he had work to do. He took a few cleansing breaths, reminding his limbs to keep their grip locked on Rose while he was away, and, using techniques he’d picked up from a year hanging out with the Ninth Dalai Lama, plunged into a trance so deep his consciousness detached from his mind and merged with the darkness and the howling so that he ceased to be the Doctor and became part of the Void. Vast and breadth-less, all-consuming and utterly without space or mass or time, the Void was and all within it were not. Except the Doctor, and the thing he clung to so tightly he was cracking her ribs. They were, within the Void, when all else ceased to be. They were able to exist here because of who he was; a son of Rassilon, the last child of Gallifrey. The last of those who could persist in the blistering absence that was the Void. He found perception beneath the howling wind and brought his mind back together with his consciousness and the sound of Rose Tyler screaming entered his ears.

He opened his eyes and was able to perceive, dimly. Shadows tumbled around them in the darkness; Dalek husks, empty Cyberman shells, and, some distance below them, the sphere of the Dalek Void ship, drawn into the nothingness from Canary Wharf like the rest of them. He dipped his shoulder towards the sphere and they began to fall towards it. Rose’s screams were incoherent jumbles of words that grew more frantic when he changed direction. She clawed at his back, her voice going raw and gravelly.

The sphere was open, as it had been since the Daleks first emerged from within it. He guided their freefall towards the open hatch and let go of Rose with both hands, causing her to screech even louder and dig her fingers into his back so deeply one broke the skin. He reached out for the lip of the hatch as they careered towards it. He had one chance to get hold of it and swing them inside. If the ship’s defenses were still up, they would hit the invisible barrier and bounce off, and all would be lost.

His fingertips brushed against icy metal and slid along the surface of the sphere until they found the edge of the hatch and he grasped it as hard as he could, swinging with all his might until they came inside the hull of the ship and were pinned against the inner wall. There was a control console on a post at the center of the sphere and somewhere on that console was the control to close the hatch. He pried Rose off of him, leaving her stuck to the ship’s wall by the G-forces. She went mad with terror, clawing at the walls of the ship as he reached out, grabbing the control console, and hauled himself towards it. The Void wind ripped at his skin, tearing at his suit to pull him back into freefall. If his hands slipped now he would go flying out of the open hatch and both he and Rose would be lost forever. At least she would have the luxury of dying far sooner than he. He would die and regenerate, die and regenerate for possibly hundreds of years in the agony of endless nothing.

Don’t think about that now! He felt along the panel and smashed the first big, threatening button his hands could find. A pleasant voice speaking a language he did not understand announced something and the hatch slowly closed. It sealed shut with a clang and he and Rose fell to the floor of the ship, safe from the Void inside the ship’s environment.

Rose began choking and gagging, slapping the floor and clutching her throat as she writhed on the ground. The Doctor sniffed the air and his respiratory system detected the presence of a hydrogen-helium atmosphere being synthesized within the ship. He scrambled over the controls and zapped them with the sonic so that the readouts changed from whatever unintelligible script they’d been in to his native Gallifreyan. He found the atmospheric controls and converted the mix to a tasty 3.727446301:1 nitrogen:oxygen cocktail and Rose began breathing properly within moments.

She lay on the floor with her knees drawn up to her chest, her shoulders rising and falling with her deliberate breathing. The Doctor’s legs felt a bit jellified and he slumped against the curved bit of metal that probably served as some sort of command chair for the Void ship and steadied himself.

“Well, now that you’re neither hurtling through the Void nor breathing Jupiter’s air, are you all right?” he asked, crouching beside her. She climbed into his arms and succumbed to hysteria, clawing at him as she’d done when they were falling through the Void. He stroked her back and held her until her panic devolved into helpless sobs against his shoulder and he felt her begin to relax.

“Shh, now,” he whispered in Gallifreyan, kissing the top of her head. “You’re all right. You’re safe, my darling. I have you.” He was surprised to hear the Gallifreyan come out of his mouth and realized that the first thing he’d spoken to her must have come out that way as well. He had gotten lazy, letting the TARDIS translate for him instead of actually speaking English. The TARDIS was a universe away, in a storage room in Canary Wharf. Too far for the telepathic field to reach them here.

“I can’t understand you!” Rose cried, turning her face to look into his eyes. Her brown eyes were wide and glistening with the tears still running down her cheeks. “Why can’t I understand you?”

“Apologies,” he said, wincing a bit at the thick Gallifreyan accent coloring his words. “I’ve not used my English for some time. TARDIS did the job for me. Sorry. It will improve.”

She sat all the way up and wiped her face with her hands. “Where are we?”

“Voidspace,” he answered, helping her to her feet. “My English sounds…what is the phrase? Daft!”

She laughed a little. “Now you sound like an alien.”

“I should – I am one!” he said, embracing her. “I am just a little rusty, but with practice I will sound like myself again. I have many, many languages and it is much more convenient to let the TARDIS do the work.”

“It’s getting better already,” she sniffed. “Is this the Daleks’ ship?”

“Yes,” he answered, checking over the controls. “Slightly damaged by the Void, but flyable by a great pilot such as I am.” He winked at her. “Are you all right?”

“Scared,” she answered. “I thought for a second you were going to let me go and not come after me.”

“I could never let you go,” he said, shaking his head. “You are…everything to me. Wonderful. Rusty English makes me talk like a song by a 1980’s musical group with large hairstyles.”

The navigation controls were heavily damaged (of course), and no amount of prodding from the sonic would get them to come fully back online. Life support was unharmed, which was lucky, and he put up the defensive barrier as soon as he found the controls for it. Rose hovered nearby, watching him while she fiddled with the cuffs of her sweater. He used the sonic on one panel and an array of lights came on inside the ship.
“Ah,” he said, smiling at her. “That is better. That’s better. Getting the hang of it again. Like falling from a bicycle.”

“Can you get us back?” she asked, looking over the controls of the ship. She was chewing on her lips, her hands tucked up into the sleeves of her sweater.

“I am going to try,” he said. “Navigation is most difficult in the Void, as there are no fixed points like your North Star. With the systems damaged, I may miss and take us to another universe. I will do my best not to do that.”

There was a panel near the flight controls that showed the ship’s proximity to the edges of the various universes. The universes were labeled with designations the Doctor did not recognize, so he couldn’t be certain which one was their home one. As he drifted near the closest universe, a light began to pulsate on the control panel that indicated a gap in the universe through which the ship could pass. At least that part of the navigation was working.

He wanted to get Rose out of the Void as soon as possible. Aside from the slightly numb post-Voidfall shock she was exhibiting, it didn’t appear as if the Void had yet done much damage to her psyche, but it was an unpredictable place and the longer they were in it, the more likely something bad might happen to her. What she needed most was a few hours’ sleep, plenty of fluids and as little agitation as possible until she recovered.

He guided the ship in the general direction of the gap in Universe 12.U74X.ش, as it was the closest one to them and as good a place to start as any. At least universes were large enough that he only had to aim for the general area in order to hit one. The question was finding the right planet to land on. If he could land the ship somewhere with a serviceable level of technology, he could fix the navigation and take them straight back home. Of course, there were only a billion planets in a given universe, and of those perhaps sixty percent were inhabitable. Of that sixty percent perhaps thirty percent had the level of technology he would require. Of that thirty, perhaps half would be hostile towards outsiders, or the atmosphere deadly to Rose. And he had the navigational equivalent of eenie-meenie-miney-mo to help him choose the right one.

The ship vibrated as they crossed from the Void into their chosen universe and Rose looked at him with hard anticipation. He’d only saved her halfway so far.

Thanks for your help - I think that detail about the gaps in the universe helped a great deal!!! :) As you know, I'm like a little fic sweatshop over there, so I hope the wait won't be too long. :)

Yay! That was really fast and a gorgeous graphic. I love your thoughts on Doomsday though. The Doctor would have totally gone after Rose.

oh how fun. I love his rusty alien English. It's pretty cool that he jumped into the void after her and somehow got them onto a ship. Nicely done!

You have no idea how surprised I was when I saw this up here. So glad you went AU! And I just know there's going to be some form of universe hopping going on; it'll be too easy for them to get it right the first time. Looking forward to whatever shenanigans they get into this time!!

You know how much I am in love with this fic, but please let me gush just a little bit more:

Awesome! I so wanted a fic where Rose fell into the Void and the Doctor followed her! You read my mind! I think Rose's reaction was realy quite believable because it's just something our human minds can comprehend when distant from it, but cannot when inside of it. I love the Doctor's care of Rose and his stilted English.

That always bugged me about Doomsday - the Doctor in my head always goes after her, and I finally just got goaded into writing what has been rattling around in there all along. This story is a bit different from the other story. Less romantic, more...well, you'll see. :) Hope you enjoy this one!

It bugged me too! Because the Doctor loves her so very much and always followed her - Rise of the Cybermen anybody? It made no sense that he didn't let go himself. Ah well.

No worries. I fix. lol - now if we could just get RTD to go ahead and re-shoot it the way it's supposed to be, we'd really have something hee hee! :)

LOL Oh totally! Or at least get him to shoot a movie that infers season 5 and beyond is some sort of nightmarish dream world and Rose wakes up in her bed to the Doctor shaking her awake and then comforting ensues.
