I tend to view the Doctor/Master dynamic more as brothers than anything else. Of course, I am more familiar with new who than I am with classic, but from what I've gathered, there's a sadness there between them that the Doctor knows things could have been different, and always, always hoped they would be. Of course, I could be a complete nutter, too... :)
And for sure he went right to the brink, but I just couldn't do that. That would've been too sadistic even for me...
