I like to sit in my backyard on a cool late summer/early fall night, with the moon and the stars out, and just listen to the earth (under the noise of the traffic and the neighborhood) - it's faint, but it's there and it's lovely. I do bring my dogs with me, so I don't know if that technically counts for alone.

Oh, that sounds nice. A night with a dog can definitively be considered as alone, I run with just me and my whippet, not a person in sight and it feels so good. Dogs are like companions when you don't when you don't want to be alone but not lonely. (Does that make any sense?)

Makes perfect sense. We have four beagles (all shelter rescues, all a little bit nutty), and they are lovely company, requiring nothing more from you than the occasional nose rub and the chance to look you in the eyes and burp (maybe that last bit is just beagles ha ha)
