timelord1: (peanuts)
We celebrate Christmas...well, Christmas gets celebrated around me mostly. MOSTLY. (read on)

I'll admit it. I'm a grinch. I start snarking about Christmas in August, as soon as the decorations get put out for sale. But, with reason. I'm one of those people for whom the holidays are hard and nasty reminders of people that are gone, and for whatever reason I just can't get over that. Mostly Christmas makes me sad and sort of owly.

EXCEPT...for Midnight Mass at the Episcopal Church in Belvidere, which is a nearby town. My family has gone to that church probably since it was built. My grammy played the piano there and my grandfather sang in the choir. My parents were married there (and buried through there), and Mr. Timelord and I were married there, too. When I stand among the people at Midnight Mass and sing (I'm a former cantor there, and when I actually go to services, they usually have me sing something solo), I feel so close to the people I've lost that, for a couple of minutes, I sort of enjoy the holiday. :) Plus, the music is outstanding. We sing all sorts of carols, and when we sing "The First Noel," I kick into Opera Voice Mode and sing this descant that rings out over the rest of the congregation and always earns me a few grinning, backward glances. Best. Thing. Ever.

After Midnight Mass, Mr. Timelord and I go home and exchange our presents to each other. He proposed in 2004 during one of these exchanges, so that is always a good memory and a nice time. Then we go to one aunt's house for Christmas, and pop into another aunt's house to say Happy Hanukkah, because we have a little of everything in our family.

I guess mostly I'm cynical about the commercial aspect. Maybe I'm wrong when I say I'm a grinch. Maybe I'm more of a Charlie Brown at Christmas. :) [Error: unknown template qotd]

Okay, homies, [livejournal.com profile] wander_realtai had a great idea, and I'm totally copying it. I want to be sure to drop some goodies in my friends' fandom stockings at [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking if you have one, but there are a bazillion on there. So, if you have a link to your stocking, could you please leave it in a comment to this post, and I'll do my very best to drop a giftie in there!!

If you want to sign up for one, you can do it here!

Thanks and Happy Christmas and all that...

Oh, this is just a gorgeous fic! I take a tiny point of pride in saying I prompted it.  :)  It's going to be part of [livejournal.com profile] who_contest's "Exits and Entrances" challenge, so y'all should go vote for it. It's got great characterization for both Doctors 9 and 10, as well as some heart-melting moments of romance and just wonderful all around. GO READ IT!!!

Exits and Entrances

Title: Unforgettable
Rating: Teen
Pairing: 10/Rose/Jack
Series: This Could Be A Little More Sonic
Category: Romance, Comedy, Drama
Summary: During a visit to the golden age of Hollywood, the Doctor, Rose and Captain Jack visit the set of the film "Citizen Kane." What follows as a result of one misstep could tear the Doctor and Rose apart forever, and leave Rose lost in the past.
Author's Notes: I owe a huge debt to [livejournal.com profile] onabearskinrug for allowing herself to be spoiled on this chapter. I wanted to spare my betas and let them have a treat this time, but I got a bit tangled and had to call in some assistance. I spared the rest of the cult, though. Hope you enjoy.

Title: How Lovely Are Your Branches
Pairing: 9/Rose
Rating: Teen - always teen. Safer that way.
Summary: The TARDIS materializes around a pine tree. Rose thinks the Doctor did it for her, for Christmas. He's not about to argue.
A/N: Behold, my first *officially* Nine story!! Written for the Doctor Rose Holiday Fixathon, based on this prompt by [livejournal.com profile] turtle_gooseNine and Rose decorate a Christmas tree that the TARDIS materializes around. Special loving thanks to [livejournal.com profile] onabearskinrug for reading it in process and making sure 9 sounded like 9, and not 10 in a leather coat and jumper. :)

My gift was posted at [livejournal.com profile] dwsanta!! Woot! I love it! And, yes world, I am not only a Doctor/Rose shipper, I am also a slash fan! There! I said it! It's listed as PG-13, but I might say a bit stronger rating because I'm a prude when it comes to rating fic. Obviously, not when it comes to writing or reading it lol! This story is sweet and loving and poignantly sad all at the same time.

At long last, here are some shots from this year's Chicago TARDIS! Woot!

Based on a post from [livejournal.com profile] jessicaqueen, I have hopped on the [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking bandwagon! If you would like to drop a treat into my stocking this year (biscuit, banana, scantily clad Time Lord), you can do it here:

My Stocking!

I hope I get something. :) More than a satsuma, anyway. :) Admittedly, a few of these fandoms were thrown in just because the instructions said "Have More Than One Fandom"...so I had to pull some out of thin air...plus, finding ones that people would know was a challenge lol. I ship a lot of my original stuff hee hee....but y'all haven't read that yet, so you can't ship it with me! :)

I am a music NUT, always looking for a new sound to listen to, and so I have a Spotify account. Highly recommend this, if you are a music person - you don't have to pay for it, but you can for extra playlist features, but pretty much if you type a song into the search bar, you can listen to it. You can find whole albums - can't download, but you can add it as an app to a mobile device.

ANYWAY, the young man I take care of (on LJ, he's known as [livejournal.com profile] falkenheart), sent me an album on Spotify called "Void Stuff" by a band called Turn Left. It's a Doctor Who concept band! Its fantastic! They're all bouncy and harmonize with a serious 80's feel to them. Here's a link to two of their songs, if you have Spotify:

The Doctor by Turn Left

Girl From Earth by Turn Left

Earlier today I posted a prompt request. Doctor Who/Flash Gordon c/o. I didn't expect this level of fabulous in response, written by the brilliant [livejournal.com profile] fannishliss.

Read! REEEEEEAD! My Hawkmen!!

You will enjoy references to other pop culture awesomeness, and loveliness all around. A treat of treats, this fic. Enjoy! I certainly did!

One of the perks of my job is that I get to watch AWESOME all day when my client is so inclined. Today's movie of choice is the 1980s classic "Flash Gordon" - I am digging this movie, and also throwing out a challenge. I hope somebody takes me up on it. How about a cracky (or not) Doctor Who/Flash Gordon crossover shorty? Anybody? Anybody? Somebody out there has to remember grooving to the Queen-provided soundtrack, the scenery chewing of Brian Blessed (DIIIIIIIIVE, my Hawkmen!) and the stoic...Timothy Dalton-ness of Prince Barin. C'mon, somebody, hook me up!!!

Snagged from [livejournal.com profile] who_in_whoville. I'm blocked so badly right now I can't even start the prompt I was sent in order to break said block. Comes from too many days not writing and doing that whole real life thing. Maybe this will help me get back into the groove so I can post Into the Howling 10.

Your job is now your Time Lord name. The last digit of your phone number is the current regeneration you are in. The nearest clothing item to your right is now the most notable item in your current wardrobe. The last person you texted is your current companion. Your favorite word is now your catchphrase.

I am a Time Lord. My name is secret, but you can call me The Friend (around my job, I'm referred to as a "professional friend" lol). I'm in my 6th regeneration: rude, currently ginger, and known as much for my ability to get out of impossible situations as for the saucy sombrero I wear on special occasions. My current companion is [livejournal.com profile] onabearskinrug, who is as saucy as my hat. We zip around the universe in my TARDIS, and when things get really dicey, I say "Aw, yeah," and off we go for more adventuring in time and space.

Anybody else going today, or am I all alone out here in Illinois? I'll be there, bucking up the courage to get Peter Davison's autograph and spending a check I squirreled away from my little teaching job to get me some good swag. Pictures to follow!!

I geeked out at a paint-your-own-pottery place a couple of weeks back, and this is my first mug of tea in my Dalek mug. The inside bottom is painted to look like the blue of the Dalek eye stalk. The people who fired this particular piece of pottery must have thought me a complete nutter. A cheery polka dot mug that shouts EXTERMINATE! Yeah, I usually only go places like that once so people don't have a chance to ask me WTF!
